Photrus – Weather Alerts for Photographers

The problem with planning landscape photography expeditions is that invariably it comes down to the weather. It’s become a truism that four trips out of five yield only disappointment for many photographers. If only there were some more reliable method of predicting weather phenomena that didn’t involve geeking out on obscurely formatted meteorological data – well there is. YouTuber, technologist and landscape photographer Christian Irmler went the extra mile and learned how to to interpret obscure meteorological data, he then turned it into an app so that we can all use it!

This is how it works.

When you sign up to Photrus, you pay in advance for a number of credits that can be used to send you alerts to the type of weather you’re looking for in the locations you need it to be. The cost works out to start at around £5 a month and you can buy more credits anytime.

The first thing you do as a user is set up a list of locations – these don’t all have to be active all of the time, so although mine are mostly in Spain I’ve set up Groups so that I can easily find them and switch them on and off depending on where I am travelling.

When I set up the location, I use the coordinates from Google maps, so I open Google maps, search for the location and drop a pin on the map, roughly where I intend to be – because this is weather, we don’t have to be accurate to the metre in this.

To get the coordinates, two finger click (Mac) or right click (windows) on the pin and the coordinates will pop up and handily copy themselves to your clipboard when you click on them. Paste them into the appropriate field in the Photrus location setup page.

You can then select from the list which type of weather phenomenon you are interested in seeing.

A day or so later, you’ll get your first alert in your email..

As you can tell, this is pretty detailed stuff and when I went to Scotland last month I used Photrus to tell me what kind of weather I could expect.

As landscape photographers, we’re used to getting up unfeasibly early and one unexpected benefit of the app is that you can tell by the nature of the alert whether it’s worth getting up before dawn the next day! Guilt free lie ins! I reckon I got an extra 10 hours sleep on that expedition, not only that but the days that Photrus recommends delivered exactly the right conditions. It almost felt like cheating!
